According to the research published in The Economist, 10 qualifications for leadership are below. Many of these features are very useful and helpful in managing an enterprise, especially a public trading organization. The management styles of companies determine the success of nations and the happiness of their employees and customers.
1- Sound moral characteristic: If the manager’s qualifications are below expected, this will reflect on the company in the same way. This may not push the company out of business, but it does mean the company will have to pay more for talented people.
Qualified people do not want to work in organizations with unqualified managers.
2- Ability to make unpleasant decisions: Companies need to make many decisions on doubtful and uncertain issues. Leaders often have to deal with demands for disagreements quickly, without being fully sure of the facts. People who do not want to risk acquiring enemies, or who want very solid evidence before making a decision, should not resort to such tasks.
3- Clarity and focus: These two features are essential for making difficult-to-understand decisions. Leading a large company and dealing with complex and multilateral issues quickly means an enormous challenge. Getting pivotal points from complex issues is essential to developing effective strategies. A leader must also be able to eliminate unnecessary voices from within the company and have the ability to truly focus on the problem.
4- Passion: The best leaders are those who want to build empires that will live longer than them. This is different from personal passions that satisfy their egos. It requires the initiative of perfectionism and ruthlessness, which are components of good leadership.
5- Effective communication skills: These features are relatively new needs demanded by the outside world such as media, analysts, stockholders. The company leader should make credible speeches. This doesn’t always mean telling all the truth. It is important in motivating their audience. Leaders who do not arouse a sense of trust and cannot make them feel sincere will find the task difficult to do.
6- The ability to evaluate people: This feature required by human resources must come beforehand. Deciding who will work better in which department is one of the main tasks required by leadership. Top tasks require intuition as well as experience in many ways.
7- Talent development mastery: This feature is necessary to train future leaders. People learn the art of leadership from a good mentor, not from books. Effective leaders should not only decide where talented individuals will work, but also become their teachers. This is the way to train leaders for all positions in an organization.
- Emotional self-confidence: Gathering the talent pool requires the ability to work with people who are better at their jobs than you are. And you need to motivate and guide these people. Leaders who are jealous of those who come after them cannot find loyalty.
In addition, self-confidence enables people to acknowledge their own weaknesses and seek help without feeling inadequate. Successful leaders should be able to say, without losing the respect of their colleagues, I don’t know what to do next.
9- Adaptation: This feature is very important when things go wrong. It means having the flexibility to stand up against setbacks. This can take the form of a change in the market, consumer behavior, or political environment. This characteristic requires a completely different approach to be planned, quickly abandoning an idea that the leader had previously defended passionately. The main factor here is the ability to reshape. Reshaping a problem can appear as a success from different angles.
10- Attraction: Attraction is not a quality taught in MBA courses. But few people can climb to the top without this feature. Although it is difficult to plan, a little luck can help.
