10 Ways to Become a Successful Student Coach

Providing a trust-based communication environment between the coach-student (client)

The process of creating a trust-based communication environment is the most important step. Being possible of  the targeted change, it can be carried out successfully only by providing a trustful environment. What you can do to rebuild the trust process or to strengthen existing trust is explored in the following sections. In the coaching process, it is important to provide an environment that is clear, understandable and confidential.

In the dialogues between the child and his family, the children may request that some of their secrets be understood and kept confidential from the other parent. This is a very natural request. Understanding that their secrets are respected, the child will choose to trust their parents more.

Defining the problem

Mutual trust is to create awareness of the student (client) about where the problem is, in an objective manner, although there are many different approaches in the relationship established with mutual trust. For problem solving, first of all, determination and acceptance of the existence of the problem is required.

Identification of the problem within the family can also be done together. The problem can be different for the child and the parents. Nevertheless, when both sides develop a willing approach to a solution, the reasons that cause problems in the approaches made by leaving the judgment are identified much more easily together and the solution can be reached much more easily by combining them with other approaches.

Determination of goals

After the identification of the problems, studies are carried out to determine the goals for the solution of the problems. There are many goal determination methods in coaching. It is ensured that the targets are determined as realistic, achievable, achievable by the person and have a certain time. After the targets are determined, the stage of creating action steps and strategies in this direction is the stage that will lead to a solution. (see “Goals”)

The unwillingness of the child to collect his / her room may be a problem issue, if the aim is to give the child responsibility in this issue, after deciding that this issue is a problem together, a goal can be determined for its solution. The goal should be of a size that the child can achieve, and do easily by him. The child will be more prone to cooperate when it is clear enough and clearly detailed what is required and when it becomes clear when to do it.

Execution of the process

In the management of the process, monitoring the development and making the evaluations objectively is an important step in changing the behavior of the person.

The prerequisite for a successful coaching system is the correct definition of the process. Regular and planned coaching interviews, allocation of sufficient time, activation of sources of motivation using active listening, being compelling and supportive, forming awareness with questions, creating awareness of change efforts are the points that need to be considered in the process.

It is part of the process to be defined correctly and make easier to maintaining with the child in the process. The child can plan the first things to do when he gets up in the morning, and how it will be easier for him to do can be determined together with his parents. He/she knows what he has set as goals and why he has to do it. He has correctly defined the convenience he will provide for himself and the difficulties he will experience if he/she does not change his behavior, so he/she will be more willing to take action. Because there is a clear definition of his own responsibility and what to do in the process.

Assessment

Making frequent feedback and evaluations during the process contributes to the restructuring of the process in order to achieve the desired goal. Making evaluations based on behavior can contribute to the person realizing the behavior that he / she needs to develop. If the child, who is well defined what to do, receives the feedback and appreciation for the behavior frequently in the process, his development will continue in a positive way. The child who realizes that his / her positive behavior is seen by his / her parents will be more willing to display good behaviors. Positive behavior is reinforced with feedback.

On the basis of the coaching process, it is essential that the “student” or client learns from their choices. The person who plays an active role in the process is not the coach, but the client. Coach; observer is the person who gives feedback and comments in the light of the information he / she observes. It does not present the solutions to the client. Makes companionship in recognizing solutions. The person who wants improvement, the “client,” is the person who actively carries out the actions in the process. The coach is with the client, but does not interfere with the client’s behavior by giving advice, only by making observations, he helps the client to create awareness. The basis; “Every person has the capacity to find the solution, only he should be able to look at things from different angles.” Parents who assume the role of coach will leave the position of constantly advising, convey their observations to their children with behavioral feedback, and become a companion in the use of their capacity to create solutions.
